Boredoms
Of all the artists in Japan's thriving
noise-music community, the Boredoms undoubtedly had
the most fun. A typical Boredoms track might feature
massively distorted guitars, squealing synths, any number
of odd found-object noisemakers, or studio-manipulation
effects; conventional song structures are thrown out
the window in favor of abrupt, whiplash-inducing changes
of direction. With Sonic Youth and Nirvana counting
themselves among the Boredoms' fans, the group actually
signed major-label deals during the early '90s, both
in Japan and the U.S., and played the Lollapalooza main
stage. Their most critically acclaimed album in 1998
Super Aea was met with a huge amount of acclaim from
the international music press, recognized as a modern
day avant garde artifact and progressive "masterpiece",
some critics even identifying the album as affirmation
that Boredoms are "the most out-there band in the world".
Notably, Super Are was considered one of the best albums
of the '90s by Pitchfork Media. Their next album Vision
Creation Newsun was released in 1999 the album's 13
minute opening track was later covered by Fischerspooner
for their album Odyssey. Boredoms busied themselves
with numerous side projects in the 00's and issued a
series of EPs, dubbed Super Roots, that often appeared
only in Japan and were all issued on the supercool label
Vice in the US. They have also collaborated and toured
with Sonic Youth, Nirvana, UNKLE, John Zorn and Ken
Ishi. On 7 July 2007, Boredoms performed a concert titled
77 Boadrum in Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York City. The
"77" denotes not only the date (7/7/2007) but also the
number of drummers in the ensemble. The Boredoms can
only be counted as something of a totally independent,
and unique act. They constantly push the boundaries
of music and art together, we are proud to be working
with such a creative force!
