Crippled
Black Phoenix
Starting out as an idea in 2004,
Crippled Black Phoenix soon established themselves as
one of the decisive bands of the new century when it
comes to cineastic soundscapes and endtime ballads not
willing to be categorized. The members, even though
all involved in successful projects besides, refuse
to be stamped as a namedropping cumulation of their
musical past. What counts is the music and the feelings
it evokes. Founder Justin Greaves and his band create
songs which continue where PINK FLOYD stopped with "Wish
You Were Here" in 1975. You can't avoid thinking of
SUPERTRAMP, CAMEL, ALAN PARSONS or YES. For those who
were born a little later, their third release "200 Tons
Of Bad Luck", might be the introduction to a new "old"
world, beyond MOGWAI, GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR or
SIGUR RÓS and not only the final access to the parental
record collection. With songs that reanimate a time,
which was forgotten in our "new" world, they take their
audience out of every reality and into a cosmos, which
appears to be wide, empty and only consisting of sound.
However, only a few month later, their new and current
record "I,Vigilante" was released. With only 6 songs
but a total length of 45 minutes, this epos chains organs,
feastful guitars, string-compositions and not least
singer Joe Volks embracing vocals, to a hauntingly deep
masterpiece. Elegies, bedded into a profound orchestration
and circled with lyrics somewhere between grief and
melancholy. Followed by extensive touring through Europe
and China, the year 2011 also brought a signing with
the Mascot Label Group, whose very own Cool Green Label
is going to release Crippled Black Phoenix' new record
"(Mankind) The Crafty Ape" in January 2012. The opus
consisting of three acts on two records was recorded
in the well-known Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire and
will bring Crippled Black Phoenix back on the road in
March/April 2012.
Justin Greaves on the new record:
'This time we wanted to make everything
right. The recording quality was supposed to play a
major role, so we went for the Chapel Studios. Our new
songs should get straight to the point without denying
our typical trademark. For me, "Mankind" is our best
work so far.'
