Diagrams
Despite
being a rather new phenomenon in the pop scene of these
days, the sound of this musical project called Diagrams
includes something very warm and familiar. However,
when listening to the first vocals off their self-titled
debut EP, this familiarity gets more concrete, at the
latest. No coincidence when considering that Diagrams
is nothing less than the new musical venture of former
Tunng (co-)founder and songwriter Sam Genders. In terms
of invention and imagination references to this experimental
folkband he once led with Mike Lindsay aren't too far
away. Minimalist pop songs, weaved out of electronic
effects, synth-bass, programmed beats and low-key funk
grooves bring to mind the leftfield pop of Arthur Russell,
Metronomy, Hot Chip, Steve Mason and Peter Gabriel.
The playful electronica and Genders' songwriting get
along more than well. Diagrams' debut EP already got
great reviews by media like the NME or BBC Music and
the first gig at this year's End Of The Road festival
in England was actually one of the weekend's highlights.
On stage Genders' solo project expands to an all conquering
nine-piece presenting an extatic mix of rich melodies
and clear pop treasures. The premier full-length "Black
Light" was released in January 2012 on Full Time Hobby
(Tunng, Timber Timbre, School of Seven Bells) and combines
experienced songwriting with a crystal clear production
which was supported ex-Moloko producer Mark Brydon.
In time with their debut, first German live dates for
Diagrams were scheduled for March 2012 and will continue
in May!
