Dog
Day
Hailing from Halifax Canada
Dog Day began as the brainchild of Seth Smith under
the name Hi Firey. He created their debut EP 'Thank
You' on his Mac before the group had even played a show.
This was originally released in 2003 as a run of 15
handmade CD-Rs but within months the album shot to the
top ten on Canada's college radio charts and the band
started receiving calls from labels both in Canada and
abroad. Assembling his band from an interesting variety
of sources, he invited long-term girlfriend and co-member
of math rock outfit 'The Burdocks' Nancy Ulrich to play
bass as well as take on a share of vocal duties. Next
he recruited husband and wife duo KC Spidle and Crystal
Thili to play drums and keyboards respectively. They
had spent years creating fast, ugly punk in Halifax's
'The Hold' and seemed unlikely co conspirators in Seth's
ultra pop. The new band quickly took on a sound that
combines the melodic directness of Seth's songs with
the primitiveness of KC and Crystal's background. Minimalist
beats, one handed keyboard lines with arrow straight
guitar and bass lay the foundation for vocal melodies
that glide effortlessly from one mood to the next. Seth
sings, and Nancy backs him at times. The effect is unique,
with the youthfulness of Nancy's vocal complementing
the maturity of Seth's. Dog Day are sometimes reminiscent
of bands like The Smiths and The Cure, who proved pop
music did not have to be optimistic all the time. Yet
their raucous and juvenile purity bring to mind bands
like Scotland's The Vaselines. In 2006, after a very
successful run with their debut, Germany's Tomlab approached
Dog Day about making a full-length album. The results
are pleasant songs that warm the soul.
