Ginga
The release of a new record by an Austrian band is usually
not a big deal, especially not when it's a re-release of one that is already two
years old. However, Vienna based five-piece band Ginga seems to be an exception,
which is worth to take a closer look at. Especially, when considering that the
local music press in Austria doesn't hesitate to draw comparisons to such great
bands as Arcade Fire or the early U2. The folk-pop darlings manage to create a
sound, shifting between fabulous organ manifests and violin arrangements, paired
with frisky melodica-tunes and a choir of young voices which surrounds lead singer
Alex Konrad's beautiful parts. When first releasing their debut album "They Should
Have Told Us" in 2008, Ginga already achieved to get some radio airplay in Austria
and were booked for local, as well as international shows. For example as supporting
act for Starsailor, an encounter, which played a major role for the just starting
career of a young and exciting band. After their show, no less a person than Starsailor
bass player James Stelfox, self-proclaimed fan of Ginga, started to support the
band and since 2010 counts himself as an inherent part of the groups line-up.
The re-recording of their debut album in the beginning of the same year, this
time with the attention on a much better production, as well as a brilliant show
at the 2010 Vienna Popfest, turned Ginga into an inevitable pop-phenomenon neither
the Austrian press, nor music fans all over the country could deny. Music media,
as well as representatives of regular newspapers already interviewed the promising
musicians and a growing fanbase craves for seeing them live this fall. And for
those who aren't convinced yet, a successful showcase at this year's Berlin Music
Week and an invitation to the Eurosonic Festival in Groningen speak for themselves!
