Jolly
Goods
Creaky
guitars, levelling drums and vocals drifting between
clear certainty and shrill moments – What singer Tanja
Pippi and her sister Angy create on their records and
during their live performances as Jolly Goods, can doubtlessly
be located far off the beaten indiepop-track and blurs
the traces to their former home in the sleepy “Rimbach
im Odenwald”. However, this just to be mentioned as
a minor detail aside as the move from the small village
to the anonymity of the big city Berlin was just a matter
of time. After destroying the surrounding live venues
with wild rock songs celebrating the Riot Grrrl spirit
of the early 90ies, shows all over Germany followed.
The two got signed to Louisville Records, released their
debut “her.barium” which was mixed by Moses Schneider
and Tobias Levin, in 2007 and played shows all over
Europe. Their sophomore album “Walrus”, released on
the Berlin label Staatsakt, shines even more then its
angry predecessor being more eclectic and melodic. It
combines rough guitar sounds with in melancholy soaked
melodies created with piano, organ and strings. Produced
by Tocotronic’s Dirk von Lowtzow and Hans Unstern, it
presents 45 minutes of intense Noise- and Folk overtures
which already received a lot of praise from the media.
"The Jolly Goods play the guitar like Kurt Cobain and
sigh like PJ Harvey"
Spex, September/October 2011
"The prickly caterpillar developed
to a beautiful butterfly"
Musikexpress, October 2011
"Noise and hysteria, songs and poetry,
Scout Niblett and Sleater-Kinney"
Rolling Stone, October 2011
"Singer Tanja Pippi is a big
friend of the queaked word, without seeming coquettish,
and at the guitar she just refuses herself enough to
make everything just right."
Visions, October 2011
