The Shipping News is an American
indie rock band which takes its name from the 1993 novel
The Shipping News, by E. Annie Proulx. The group formed
in the fall of 1996 when members Jason Noble and Jeff
Mueller, who were both in Rodan, collaborated to create
music for the Chicago-based syndicated National Public
Radio program This American Life. Kyle Crabtree was
later recruited as drummer which completed the original
lineup. In 2004, Todd Cook, former member of Parlour,
The For Carnation, and the reunited Slint, was recruited
as bass player. The group's sound is a beautiful merger
of bands similar to those of earlier Louisville, Kentucky
indie rock bands such as Slint and Rodan as well as
Mueller's former band June of 44. Shipping News are
a band that has always garnered strong critical praise,
including an 8.8/10 from Pitchfork Media. Their following
albums, have become a testament to their majestic post
rock sound. In 2002 The band appeared at the Shellac
curated All Tomorrows Parties.A
band of thought and sound, a group that have become
live show to behold, make sure you catch the shipping
news, whilst they are still out at sea!
