Son
Lux
The fact
that Ryan Lott gained a classic musical education may
even be recognized by a layman. But the fusion of classical
arrangements and electronic soundscapes under his alter
ego Son Lux represents a completely new type of composition
- classical notions, modern electronics, unusual pop
and transcendent emotion meeting somewhere between concert
halls and small clubs. Lott, who was born in 1979 Denver,
Colorado studied composition and piano at Indiana University,
where he started collaborating with a balley and modern
dance student, who later became his wife. Writing the
music for her choreographies made him wish to create
something new. Ryan established the idea of a multimedia
art gala by the name CONNECT and, alongside with his
wife and two friends, founded the caritative ASH (Art
Serving Humanity) ensemble. His next big step was the
2008 Son Lux debut "At War With Walls And Mazes" on
Anticon (WHY?, 13&God, Baths). His live debut was even
a year before when he played at a college festival next
to acts like Sufjan Stevens and Emmylou Harris. Shows
in the USA and Europe followed. Then, exept for the release
of a digital EP entitled "Weapons" in 2010, Son Lux
took a break but returned in early 2011, when Lott received
an envelope with NPR's yearly "All Songs Considered"
challenge to record an entire album in only 28 days.
He couldn't resist and with the help of illustrous friends
like Peter Silberman (The Antlers), Shara Worden (My
Brightest Diamond), DM Stith and the yMusic Sextet (Antony,
Sufjan, the National) created a magical record which
saw its release in August 2011. Strings, choirs and
waves of static-smacked keys develop to a true symphony
of sound one can hardly believe has been crafted within
only a month time.
