We
Have Band
We Have Band, 3 friends, Darren
Bancroft and husband and wife duo Thomas and Dede Wegg-Prosser,
who met whilst working at a record label, left to form
a band, play Glastonbury, release an album that was
critically acclaimed by everyone from NME to Dazed &
Confused and tour the world. So far so simple. Yet despite
the plaudits the band were not satisfied. When they
had originally formed the band, their goal had been
little more than to have some fun with little thought
of anyone ever hearing their songs, but following the
release of WHB things were different this time. There
was no desire within the band to repeat its formula.
Thomas had already started writing new material whilst
on tour, handling the emotional and physical rollercoaster
of playing around 130 shows a year, a grueling schedule
that saw off at least 2 tour managers. Moving forward
also meant a radical change in how the band approached
writing the new album. From the music through to the
lyrics, they wanted to create something 'timeless'.
The result, 'Ternion', is a very different record, an
intensely personal album that manages to be both uplifting
and melancholic. At their Hereford base, away from London
and with no desire or need to fit into any particular
scene, the album's new sound began to emerge and as
each track was developed and more and more live instrumentation
was added the shape of the album began to coalesce.
With it's structure in place, the band joined ex Clor
member and Foals producer Luke Smith at his Flesh and
Bone Studio in London, where the banks of vintage analogue
equipment breathed extra warmth into the project and
Luke's determination to push the band to get the sound
just right began to pay dividends. Those expecting WHB
2 will be in for a surprise. Whilst much of what made
the first album so special is still there, especially
the sublime interplay between the 3 band members' vocals,
'Ternion' is a very different record.
